Atmospheric Composition, Global Cycles and Lifetimes

چکیده

Photochemical smog is the result of complex chemistry taking place when sunlight irradiates the atmosphere laden with organic gases and nitrous oxides. High temperatures and bright sun light favour photochemical smog. The secondary pollutants, formed from the organic gases and nitrous oxides, are more aggressive and dangerous as the first pollutants. Secondary pollutants are O3, organic nitrates, oxidized hydrocarbons and aerosol.

Determination of atmospheric lifetimes via the measurement of OH radical kinetics.

The chemical composition of the earth’s atmosphere has been an area of general research interest for many decades.1 However, increased attention to a number of environmental issues has fostered a more detailed focus in recent years. These environmental drivers include such topics as (i) the destruction of stratospheric ozone via photochemical cycles involving industrial halocarbons and their re...

Lifetimes and time scales in atmospheric chemistry.

Atmospheric composition is controlled by the emission, photochemistry and transport of many trace gases. Understanding the time scale as well as the chemical and spatial patterns of perturbations to trace gases is needed to evaluate possible environmental damage (e.g. stratospheric ozone depletion or climate change) caused by anthropogenic emissions. This paper reviews lessons learned from trea...

Consistent sets of atmospheric lifetimes and radiative forcings on climate for CFC replacements: HCFCs and HFCs

Recognition of deleterious effects of chlorine and bromine on ozone and climate over the last several decades has resulted in international accords to halt the production of chlorine-containing chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) and bromine-containing halons. It is well recognized, however, that these chemicals have had important uses to society, particularly as refrigerants, as solvents, as plastic bl...

Stratospheric Loss and Atmospheric Lifetimes of CFC-11 and CFC-12 Derived From Satellite Observations

The lifetimes of CFC-11 and CFC-12 have been evaluated using global observations of their stratospheric distributions from satellite-based instruments over the time period from 1992 to 2010. The chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) datasets are from the Cryogen Limb Array Etalon Spectrometer (CLAES), the Cryogenic Infrared Spectrometers and Telescopes for the Atmosphere (CRISTA-1 and CRISTA2), the Michelso...

Radiative efficiencies for fluorinated esters: indirect global warming potentials of hydrofluoroethers.

Density Functional Theory (DFT) has been used with an empirically-derived correction for the wavenumbers of vibrational band positions to predict the infrared spectra of several fluorinated esters (FESs). Radiative efficiencies (REs) were then determined using the method of Pinnock et al. and these were used with atmospheric lifetimes from the literature to determine the direct global warming p...
